There is little doubt that the decade of the ‘50s holds great fascination for younger folks, who missed all the fun, but it offers an abundance of nostalgia for those lucky enough to have lived back then.
Life for a kid in the fifties offered a degree of freedom, adventure and exploration lost to today’s youth. Those were the days of building forts in orchards, neighborhood rubber gun fights, snakes turned loose in classrooms, disastrous first dates, cool cars, hopping freight trains, and all types of pranks and mischief.
This book documents one boy’s adventures during the ‘50s in a rural town in California. Although the activities take place in Los Gatos, which is on the edge of Silicon Valley, the same exploits were most likely common across America during those relatively innocent years.
If you were born too late and missed all the fun, this book will provide a taste of the best decade to be a kid. It was a time that folks with gray hair remember well. The stories will generate happy memories in an older generation and create a keyhole for younger forks to peek through at the life their parents or grandparents lived.
It is very light reading with humorous stories that, in many cases, are somewhat exaggerated. This book is meant to be fun to read.
Take a trip back to the days of the Lone Ranger, Elvis, 1950 Fords with fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror and a time when orchards covered the valley and summer jobs of picking fruit were plentiful. Take an enjoyable trip back to The Huckleberry Days of the ‘50s.

Well let's start with full disclosure. The author and I went to the High School, Los Gatos High, around which many of his stories revolve. We have reunited as friends by long distance internet contact. I knew that one of my stories was to be included. So with that behind us let's begin. I read the book in just two sittings and had a hard time putting it down. Why? Certainly not because it was a suspenseful book but because it was such a wonderful reminder of my own coming of age and the foibles we all have as growing humans. Ralph has captured the feelings of the 50s as well as his and his buddies (and girls) activities that sadly our children, grandchildren and their children will never experience again. The book provided me with a wonderful window on my own childhood which took place only 4 miles from Ralph's in Saratoga, California at exactly the same time. The book traces his escapades and experiences from early school days to High School times and beyond. The magic this book brings to life is a time when innocence and freedom for children allowed us to grow, stumble and learn, although sometimes bloodied, without the careful, sometimes frenzied close supervision we require to keep our children safe today.
So it's a set of snapshots that contrast our world of today with the last period possibly which gave children the capability to have that innocence and freedom without the dangers of today. I recommend it highly, even if you skip the vignette I gave him.

The Huckleberry Days of the '50s edition by Ralph Higgins Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
I didn't grow up in Los Gatos, but I did grow up in the '50s. We didn't have the beautiful orchards that the author did. I did live in that area (Santa Clara, San Jose, Campbell) in the '60s & '70s and some of the orchards had not yet been uprooted, so I was able to envision myself there. Although I was a girl (still am in some ways), I could remember some of my brothers' escapades similar to those which Ralph seems to capture with his wonderful use of the English language. Many of the episodes are laugh out loud good. My husband who grew up in Southern California could also relate to many of his stories and, of couse, has some of his own. A truly fun and nostalgic read.
I felt that only those of us that grew up in Los Gatos and went to school at Los Gatos High would care about reading this book.
History buffs might like it also.
I was 2 years behind Ralph going to Grammer school & high school in Los Gatos. I lived the same or similar lifestyle, did the same or similar things boys did in those days, & knew many of the same teachers. This was a great trip down the old memory lane.
