After an ‘Annus horribilis’ that saw her lose her mother to cancer and her father to a broken heart, Genèvieve Sinclair’s spirits are boosted when she inherits a small house in rural France from an aunt she never knew existed. Seeing this as a Godsend, she decides to turn the semi-derelict building into a bed and breakfast hotel.
Theo Colbert, a local builder down on his luck, offers to help with the conversion. The relationship between the two soon becomes much closer than mere business acquaintances.
All does not run smoothly for Genevive in the quiet little town, because both the Notary and the local police chief seem to have taken a dislike to the newcomer. However, when she takes in a busload of stranded Second World War veterans she finds out she also has many friends.
As the relationship develops, Genevieve finds she also has to cope with the spite and jealousies of Theo's family, although she finds an ally in Theo's mother.
But then REAL trouble comes! One of Genevieve's guests is murdered! And when Theo is suspected of the crime, he and Genevieve take on the role of detective to find the real killer - unless Theo IS the real killer!
The murder is only one case the dynamic duo have to solve, for on top of it is the mystery surrounding the unearthing of a long-buried secret in the basement of the old house. A secret involving more murders that certain local worthies would kill yet again to protect.
Another engrossing murder mystery from a growing talent.
Rather reminiscent of MC Beaton at her very best!
And now at a new bargain price, why not give Barbara a try?

Like many people, I have often fantasised about escaping the rat race, and living in a character cottage in a quaint village in France. This book feeds those fantasies successfully. The main characters were convincing, and the challenges faced in restoring the house kept me interested. This kept me entertained from start to finish.Product details

A Little Place in France edition by Barbara Hammond Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was a lovely story about France, love and life! Lots of mini-mysteries within but it's so much more! If you love France and the French way of life, you'll enjoy this!
A treat of a book; upon finishing I immediately searched for additional Barbara Hammond titles. Well-written in a reserved tone that at times reminded me of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The portrayal of the protagonist was a refreshing change from others I have read. I am not sure if it was the first-person approach or something else, but I was intrigued throughout the entire book.
If you are working too much and need a vacation, go to a patisserie, purchase some French edibles, make strong coffee in your French press, and snuggle up with this book. You will return to your home having greatly enjoyed your trip to a small section of France.
An excellent read. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the French countryside. Pretty realistic depiction of the differences in American and French customs anc view points.
Enjoyed very much. Woman taking on new career with risks, challenges with some romance thrown is as a sub plot.
