There's no greater job in the universe than that of a Recon Marine. There is also none more dangerous.
At first, Marsden and his team's mission seems simple enough. They are to check out an anomaly on a recently discovered world, determine if it's safe, and then turn it over to Science Corps for further study. They weren't expecting it be their first contact with a new alien race, nor were they expecting that alien race to already be preparing for war against humanity. The crashed ship is a biological warfare research vessel, and it is full of terrifying creatures collected specifically to destroy humans.
What started as a cakewalk for a large group of highly-trained marines becomes a desperate fight for survival as the deadly menagerie of the ship set out to systematically wipe the human invaders out.

Recon Marines eBook PK Hawkins Reviews
I gave this book a three-star rating because, Marines in this book are not very bright. First of all when you are on a mission why wouldn't you look up when you enter a new location as Marines you were taught to take in your entire environment. Too many deaths when the casualty rate goes up you know you should reassess your position and do a strategic withdraw. The only character in this book I actually liked was Axel if you like dark depressing books with many people dying then you will enjoy this book I would give a second book a chance if the author wrote. One.
This book has promise but there are too many inconsistencies. First, the author knows nothing about military ranks, disciplines or courtesies. If you've never served, this probably won't bother you. Second, he way underestimates technology. Laser weapons are a near reality now and the US Navy already has a ship with rail guns. Here we are in some unknown time in the future and the ship has FTL capabilities. The Marines however have rifles that fire bullets. FTL and bullets? Goofy. In addition, the corpsman's abilities and equipment seem to be less than what corpsmen have now. I guess all science in the future will be aimed at FTL. Goofy.
"Recon Marines," is a quickly paced, pretty much silly, chunky novella, that does have a few interesting characters.
Basic story takes place 130 years in the future. A troop spaceship, containing a Recon Marine unit is dispatched through hyperspace to investigate a crashed, alien ship. Humans have already had interaction with a few aliens species, with mixed results. Upon arrival, the approximately platoon sized unit, drops down to the surface, splits in two, enters the ship, and is immediately set upon by creatures.
It's a familiar SciFi narrative, nothing new or particularly engaging, other than the MC, and a couple of the supporting cast. The writing is mediocre at best, and amateurish at worse. "Recon Marines," is equivalent to fast food something to fill a void, when nothing else better is available.
Recommendation is "neutral," and the novella was fully read via Unlimited.
Well, I made it to page 70 @ 50% before I gave up. Really the book isn't bad as such but it isn't really very good either. Mediocre, lukewarm, just kind of ho hum. Here we are with a "Recon" Marine unit that has experienced 30%+ casualties and well, I just really don't care! The writing while technically proficient is NOT gripping, does NOT get me engaged with the characters or the story, does NOT engender any feeling of anticipation, feeling of empathy, feeling of excitement at all. Just got bored!
Also the Science wasn't in the Fiction, didn't read as believable for a culture 130+ years into the future. If we can't do better than bullet firing pop- guns by then maybe the big bad aliens should win!
One thing gripes me most of all. Why do authors who have never served in a combat MOS try to project their take on said combat teams? To say a "Recon Marine" unit is discouraged from having friends in the unit because it hurts too much when a fellow Marine falls is Disingenuous and LUDICROUS! In a combat team, every single one of you becomes a brother/sister in the fire. We depend on each other to cover our flanks, to be there when we're hurt or in dire straits. Author You Are Wrong!
Great read!!!
I like the book, but bought the narration so I could listen while doing other things & the guy reads the way kids did when taking turns on a book aloud in english class.
This book is pretty much a horror story based on alien, in my opinion. there is no character development and I felt like I was reading through a fog. I deleted this book after reading about 1/2 of it.
Wow !, . Action packed all the way through. there was never an moment when the characters could rest. I started to feel bad for them But I never wanted the story to end.
This book definitely goes on my " To be read Again and again shelf " . I am anxiously awaiting the next novel from Hawkins.
